What Are THCA Smalls?

By Vault Extracts, Biochemistry Engineer · Published July 17, 2026

THCA smalls are the smaller buds from the same plants and harvests as full-size flower — same strain, same batch, usually the same lab report — sold at a lower price purely because of their size. Here's why they exist and when they're the smart buy.

Smalls are a size grade, not a quality grade

Every cannabis or hemp plant produces buds of different sizes. The big, dense colas near the top get the most light and grow the largest; buds lower on the plant and toward the interior come out smaller. After harvest and drying, cultivators sort the flower by size. The large showpiece buds are sold as regular flower, and the smaller ones — often called smalls or popcorn buds — are packaged separately at a lower price.

The key point: THCA smalls typically come from the same plants and the same harvest as the full-size buds sitting next to them on the menu. They were simply sorted into a different pile.

Same batch, same lab results

Because smalls are pulled from the same batch as the full-size flower, they're generally covered by the same Certificate of Analysis — the strain, cannabinoid profile, and safety screening apply to the whole batch, and the size sort happens after testing.

Up close, smalls can look slightly different: sometimes a bit leafier, sometimes less dense than a hand-selected top cola. But the genetics and the lab numbers are shared. If you want to confirm exactly what you're getting, check the batch's lab report — our guide on how to read a COA walks through every section.

Why smalls cost less

The flower market pays a premium for appearance. Large, photogenic buds — what people call bag appeal — command full price, so anything that doesn't look the part gets discounted even when it's the same material. That's a cosmetic judgment, not a quality defect.

For the seller, smalls are also faster to package and don't require the careful handling that keeps big colas intact. Those savings get passed along, which is why smalls are consistently one of the best price-per-gram values in any lineup.

Where smalls shine

When to buy full-size flower instead

Smalls aren't always the right call. If you're gifting, if you enjoy breaking down a whole nug by hand, or if part of the fun is admiring the structure and frost of a well-grown cola, spring for regular THCA flower. The experience of a beautiful bud is real — you're just paying for the look, not for a different lab result.

Frequently asked questions

Are THCA smalls weaker than regular buds?

No. Smalls are sorted by size, not potency. They generally come from the same plants and batches as full-size flower and are covered by the same lab results.

Why are smalls so much cheaper?

The market pays a premium for large, photogenic buds. Smalls skip that cosmetic premium and are simpler to package, so the savings get passed to you.

What are smalls best used for?

Anything where you grind the flower anyway — rolling joints, packing bowls, everyday sessions, or home infusions. Bud size only matters if appearance matters to you.
